Adelaide showgirl Lily "had only been on stage once" before auditioning for Shimmery Burlesque. Chasing her dreams, she took a leap and sent a video audition, and before she knew it she was on an early morning flight from Adelaide to Melbourne to join the Shimmery cast–a moment that would change her life forever.

What do you love most about Shimmery Burlesque?
It's such an honour to be able to bring our love for the art of tease to a big stage, with a new audience that may not have seen burlesque before. Every part of the show is so personal to us, every rhinestone is hand placed and the stories we tell feel like we are making our mark on history. There is something very special and intimate about Shimmery that leaves the audience in awe every single show and that feels incredible to be part of.
How did you become a Shimmery Showgirl?
I decided I wanted to apply to be part of the show very early in my burlesque career, so early in fact I had only been on stage once before auditioning! I thought I may get more of an off stage type of role considering my experience and I was ready to put in the work, but I guess the universe had other plans! I ended up being offered a spot in the main cast and I think I just about fainted at the time. Shimmery was a huge career goal of mine and to be trusted to bring the vision to life felt like a real honour. The day that I found out about being cast, I was taken to dinner to celebrate and ended up getting proposed to because my fiancé knew how important that moment was to me and said "I wanted to make this the best day of your life" so Shimmery is now forever in history as the best day of my life!

What's it like being backstage at Shimmery?
I always try and arrive with my makeup completed and just do any final touches at the theatre so I can focus on mentally preparing and warming up. There's a lot that goes into our show so it's important for me to be really present and meditation really helps with that. I usually make up a rhyme or poem to prompt all of my cues for the stage and I repeat it over and over which also helps with any stage nerves that may pop up. Side stage is usually full of giggles and the cast hyping each other up right before we walk out... unless of course there are quick changes!!!

What sort of person do you feel is going to love Shimmery Burlesque?
The audience is the most important part of what we do, being able to have that energetic exchange on stage between us and them is why I love being an entertainer! There's nothing quite like looking into that huge crowd and catching one persons eye and seeing their experience for just a moment. Shimmery is such a special show and I think the audience feel that, the way they talk about "never having seen anything like it" reminds me how important our job is of bringing burlesque to a wider audience.

What does Burlesque mean to you?
Burlesque is my future, past and present all wrapped into one! It's a combination of the women I've been and am becoming with every performance, it feels incredibly beautiful to be sharing that with the world. I have people from around the world message me as I share my journey, saying that it has inspired them to go to a class and try it out and that makes me feel like I'm on the right path. I want to inspire people to chase their dreams no matter how large or crazy they may seem... to be crazy enough to believe "why not me!?"
